  • Job Summary:

  • Responds to calls into the Emergency Communications Center (ECC), from referring physicians, AUMC physicians, pre-hospital (EMS) providers, and other medical personnel in an efficient and customer-oriented manner; and to assist in communications and coordination of emergency patient referrals and transportation, both entering and in some circumstances, leaving our hospital. The secondary responsibility of this position includes but is not limited to the facilitation of communications within the Emergency Department and with consulting physicians, communicating via radio with helicopters, transport teams, and ambulances; including receiving patient information, completing documentation, and directing calls appropriately based on predetermined criteria. This role is also responsible for the dispatch of AU Health AirCare critical care transport teams, providing in-flight communications and plots flight-following locations on a map for helicopters or ambulances.


    Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:


    With the aid of a computerized database, responds to calls from various AUMC constituents (referring physicians, pre-hospital providers, AUMC physicians, aero medical transport providers, and various other healthcare providers) and from AUMC personnel requesting information. Make appropriate decisions based upon the problem presenting. Triages emergency calls and dispatches according to written policies and procedures of the AUMC ECC. Ensures the safety of AirCare flight crews by being responsible for AirCare dispatching, flight following, and tracking.
    Collects accurate and complete data that is legibly recorded on Call Record Forms. Enters data accurately and timely into the computer database. Dispatches all calls efficiently and professionally. Triages emergency calls and dispatches according to written policies and procedures of the AUMC ECC. Maintains a database for all users of the ECC by gathering, updating, and maintaining control of information specific to each referring hospital and physician, AUMC physicians, services, and programs available at AUMC.
    Collects and relays pertinent patient demographic information and patient condition to transport crews and receiving services at AUMC. Tracks, monitors, and records call by maintaining call logs and documentation of patient information with accuracy to management. Works with Admissions to ensure patient information is entered into all systems timely and the patient's medical record number can be obtained for reference in the ECC database.
    Acts as a liaison between referring physicians, AUMC physicians, Emergency transportation and aeromedical service providers, and AUMC specialty transport teams to ensure timely, efficient, friendly, and accurate communication between all parties. Successfully uses the patching capability of radio equipment to connect pre-hospital EMS and AEMS providers with ED physicians and nurses. Maintains familiarity with the dispatch protocols and radio communications of various EMS and law enforcement providers to allow effective two-way radio communications to request helicopter services.
    Uses professional language and appropriate professional jargon for communicating by two-way radio with ground ambulances, air ambulance crews and pilots, and internal ED radio communications equipment. Successfully uses the patch capability of radio equipment to connect pre-hospital EMS and AEMS providers with ED physicians and nurses. Adheres to FCC Guidelines and laws for operating radio transmitters. Maintains familiarity with the dispatch protocols and radio communications of various EMS and law enforcement providers.
    Performs other duties as assigned

    Required Minimum Education:

    • High School Diploma General or GED General

    Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):


    All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
    • EMT-BASIC - EMT-BASIC or EMT-INT - EMT-Intermediate or EMT-ADV - EMT-Advanced or NREMT - NREMT or PARA - Paramedic

    Required Minimum Experience:


    Experience in direct patient care in a hospital or EMS field or as an EMS Dispatcher required


    Required Minimum Skills:


    Familiar with professional jargon used by EMS professionals, and aircraft pilots
    Experience operating two-way radio equipment
